Smart Space

This project explores the technologies that form part of ambient intelligence and how these technologies are becoming more ubiquitous, intertwining with daily human activities, with and without conscious input.

We are currently facing water shortages in many parts of the world. I decided to take an optimistic outlook on how these intelligent technologies can help us form new habits, make us aware of our individual impact on the environment, and create preventative habits in society. A smart sustainability kitchen that keeps score of your use of resources, your food waste, and helps you use the food that you do waste to cultivate a bio-sustainable garden.

In order to make the user where of their personal carbon footprint, and motivate them to change their habits, the UI has to be encouraging. At first, my approach to the visual style, especially notifications to the user, was a bit alarming, rather than encouraging. I had to find a balance on how to communicate mass amounts of data, that would be easily absorbed by the user, but not make the user paranoid. Sustainability is about taking actions that don’t leave permanent damage, and contributes to cleaning up the earth.

The fridge inhabits a feature to collaboratively create a meal using purchased and garden ingredients. This process of crafting a meal has to feel organic. The gestures and interactions I chose reflected a fluid and organic approach to living and creating.
